While many root canal patients can return to their normal routine relatively quickly, it is still important to understand how to properly recover to reduce the risk of setbacks or complications.
A root canal procedure requires a local anesthetic to minimize discomfort. The procedure begins with drilling a small hole to access the root of the tooth. The infected or decayed parts of the dental pulp are removed and the tooth is filled. Lastly, a cap is placed over the tooth for added protection and improved appearance.
The endodontist may prescribe a pain reliever after a root canal procedure. It can help to have this prescription filled as soon as possible; be sure not to go above the recommended dosage. The mouth will also be numb for several hours after the root canal procedure, so it is important to avoid eating any foods or drinking anything of extreme hot or cold temperature, or placing any pressure on the affected area to avoid irritation.
Most patients feel good enough to return to a relatively normal routine after the first day of recovery. This can include going to work or school as well as interacting socially. However, it is important to continue eating a soft diet and avoid chewing on the affected area as much as possible. Oral hygiene is of the utmost importance, as well. Be sure to brush regularly and use mouthwash as prescribed by the endodontist to avoid infection. Brush the affected area as gently (yet thoroughly) as possible.
The endodontist may schedule a check-up visit or encourage the patient to call if there are any complications. It is important to keep an eye on the affected area until a full recovery is made. If there are scheduled follow-up visits, then be sure not to miss them.
